April 17th-The Road in to Yellowstone Opens Today!!!

Good Morning Folks,

Yellowstone National Park opens the West gate to vehicles this morning and we are on tap for a beautiful opening day. The weather forecast for the next 4 days is sunny and mid to upper 50′s. It is going to be absolutely glorious for the weekend. Look for some of the area’s freestone rivers to rise and get a little off color. I would expect rivers like the Yellowstone, Big Hole, and others to see a major bump in flow as the low elevation snow completely melts over the next few days. We got plastered with snow on Tuesday and Wednesday so this new snow will be adding to an already heavy back country snow pack, and contributing to the expected weekend’s low elevation snow melt. Check out the Ranch photo-that is yesterday 4/16/09 at around dinner time, no BBQ’s right now!
A couple of photos of the Henry’s Fork’s legendary Rainbows. Man, are they in good condition! These are from yesterday, as these pesky buggers fell prey to the mighty Shop Vac #16!!! The Lower Fork is fishing quite well with Baetis and Midges, and the rumor mill is kicking out thoughts of Mother’s Day Caddis. For all the folks coming out this summer, especially in June, I would highly consider spending a few of your fishing days with us on the Fork. I expect hatches will be very strong this summer. Typically we get very good PMD’s and Caddis on the lower river, along with Green and Gray Drakes and a smattering of small stoneflies. Last year we saw numerous large Browns in the Warm River to Ashton stretch, so it will be exciting to see if we get a repeat performance this year. This is one of my favorite stretches of any river to float, as the action is usually very steady for feisty rainbows. The scenery is outstanding, and the water character is very interesting! June also brings birds galore to this stretch bringing a visual and audio symphony to everyone who fishes the Henry’s Fork from Warm River to Ashton.
Time to head into Yellowstone, I have my coffee and camera, I am ready to roll. Check back soon with more fishing information and scenes from Yellowstone.
